INTRODUCTION

The department of Labour Studies was established in 1982. It was established when the institute introduced the Certificate Course in Labour Studies. Later in 1990 the Advanced Diploma in Labour Studies was introduced and intended to train Labour Inspectors and Labour Administrators for the Labour Department. Further development was experienced in 2004 when the Labour Studies Department introduced the Postgraduate Diploma in Law, Mediation and Arbitration. In 2006/07 the Labour Studies Department introduced the Bachelor Degree in Industrial Relations and again in 2007/08 the Ordinary Diploma in Industrial Relations was introduced. Due to the new demands of the labour market and the Nation at large, the department introduced new courses in Labour Relations and Public Management in 2016/17; from the Certificate level to the Bachelor degree. All academic programs are recognised by NACTE and follow the competence based approach. The programs do not only focus on imparting knowledge to students but also equipping students with necessary skills and understanding which are important in the promotion of Industrial transformation in the country and Africa at large.

Background Information on the Curriculum

The curricula for Labour Relations and Public Management programme at the Institute of Social Work (ISW) are important guidelines to the students, faculty, administrative staff and other stakeholders. They provide information for other interested partners, and other stakeholders in industrial relations and related fields.  Labour Relations is an essential field of study as it is deemed functional in different sectors of the economy. It is necessary for sustainable national development. Currently, with the complications of the globalized world, marked by increased competitiveness, high quality professionals to spearhead increased work efficiency and effectiveness are highly required. It is in this context that the ISW seeks to ensure that students are equipped with necessary competences, which will enable them play roles requiring high levels of skills, knowledge and understanding and thereby take responsibility for respective areas of specialization. As such the curriculum has adopted the Competence Based Education Training with a flexible mode of assessment.

BASIC TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE IN LABOUR RELATIONS AND PUBLIC MANAGEMENT 

General objective

The general objective of the Basic Technician Certificate in Labour Relations and Public Management (BCLPM) program is to produce qualified and competent Labour Relations practitioners, administrators, managers and other competent personnel who are prepared to work on new emerging roles in the Tanzanian modern corporate environment, in the context of global economic development.

Specific Objectives

The specific objectives include the following:

  1. To enable graduates to identify, integrate and apply a body of knowledge and a set of techniques in labour and public management processes.
  1. To impart a body of knowledge to students and put it into operation to help build an effective business organization that is more productive and successful.
  1. To equip students with knowledge, skills and values that stress on effective decision in order to bring and maintain productivity and improve welfare of the organization.

The specific objectives include the following:

  1. To enable graduates to identify, integrate and apply a body of knowledge and a set of techniques in the management process.
  1. To impart a body of knowledge to students and put it into operation to help building an effective business organization that is more productive and successful.
