INTRODUCTION

The Institute’s main functions of training, research and consultancy. It was established in 1982 in exercising provisions of the Institute’s establishment Act No 26 of 1973. In 1982 the department introduced a one year Certificate Course in Labour Studies, followed by a three years Advanced Diploma in Labour Studies in 1990, and Postgraduate Diploma in Law Mediation and Arbitration in 2004.

The Department recognizes that Technical Education is very important in the process of social and economic development of a country as it enables acquisition of knowledge and skills necessary for effective societal development. This foundation is inherent into the Institutes vision, the impact of which is a gradual transformation made from Knowledge – Based Training (KBET) to Competence-Based Training (CBET) in respect of all training programmes. In 2006, the department started to run Bachelor Degree in Industrial Relations (National Technician Award – Level 8) which phased out Advanced Diploma. It subsequently introduced Ordinary Diploma in Industrial Relations (National Technician award – Level 6) in 2007, both of which aimed at equipping trainees with required professional knowledge, skills and competencies in the area of Employment and Labour Relations.

DEPARTMENT OPERATIONS

The department of Labour Studies have different operations as summarized below:-

1. Training Courses

Offering NTA Level 4 (Certificate in Industrial Relations - one year), NTA Level 6 (Ordinary Diploma in Industrial Relations - Two years), NTA Level 7 & 8 (Degree in Industrial Relations – Three years), and Postgraduate Diploma in Law, Mediation and Arbitration (One year). Postgraduate course is run on evening classes, while the rest are run on regular and evening class arrangements.

2. Research Works

The Department plan to utilise its research resources in the above mentioned training areas. It is proudly prepared to cooperate with individuals and organisations in conducting research in Workplace Relations profession.

3. Consultancy

The Department of Labour Studies offers the following courses:-
