About the Institute
The Institute of Social Work is situated at the corner of Shekilango and Ali Hassan Mwinyi Road, in Kijitonyama area of Dar es Salaam, in the United Republic of Tanzania. The Institute ,formerly known as the National Social Welfare Training Institute, was established by an Act of Parliament No. 26 of 1973 as subsequently amended under the written laws (Miscellaneous Amendment) No. 3 Act 2002, with the major objective of training, research and consultancy.
With the establishment of National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) by the Parliamentary Act No. of 1997, the Institute was registered by NACTE on 26/07/2002 and was accredited in 30th November, 2005 to provide National Technical Awards (NTA) from level 4 up to level 8 (i.e. Certificate, Ordinary Diploma and Degree Programs).

Our Mission
To train, conduct research and provide consultancy services in area of core competences to meet the market demand and to contribute to the overall social, political and economic development of the country.
Functions of the Institute
The major functions are clearly stipulated in the Act, which established the Institute. They entail training, research and consultancy in the fields of Social Work, Labour Studies and Human Resources Management.
